Alternative Botanical Bouquets.
Lettuce talk about Wedding Bouquets! (Boom Boom) It’s time for our second wedding related post, the alternative botanical wedding bouquet! It’s always great when a brave bride comes to you looking for something “non-traditional” or something standout, because that’s where you really get the chance to let your creative imagination run wild.
On the rare occasion a bride does walk in with a different idea, those ideas tend to involve lots of feathers, sparkly stones and pretty ribbons, however, we like to encourage our brides to stick with botanical based arrangements; we still achieve a stunning result without looking too frou frou or tacky!
Some good materials for alternative botanical bouquets are Herbs, Lettuce, Foliage, Succulents, Tillandsia, Vegetables, Fruit, Bromeliads etc. Just remember if you are using something that is soft and will wilt (some herbs, lettuce etc), do give it a good soak and wire it well into the bouquet. Nothing worse than a wilted bouquet in photos!
Lettuce look at some of our favourite alternative botanical bouquets. And yes, the first bouquet is Lettuce. How did you guess?

What do you think would look good in or as a alternative botanical bouquet? If you had to choose something other than flowers, what would it be?
Mosser.
HOW COOL IS THIS?! I love moss, and if you love moss too you can now have your own little bit of green in your office, home, anywhere really! These well designed, tiny jars of Mossy goodness are brought to you by Mosser, a New York based company. I would describe these little jars as a piece of living, breathing art, that would definitely attract alot of attention no matter where they were placed.

Did you know that Moss has been around for 350 million years, and thrives in humid CO2-rich micro-environments. Moss absorbs water and nutrients through their leaves. They differ from ‘higher’ plants by not having internal water-bearing vessels, and no flowers and therefore no fruits, cones or seeds.
If you are like me, you already have your credit card in hand ready to get one of these little babies, which you can do here. Keep up the stellar work Mosser!
The Boutonnière.
Apart from Bridezillas, I really do love weddings. The dress, the love, the dancing, THE FLOWERS! In particular I love all the fine details that are put into weddings, which leads me to the first of our wedding related posts: The Boutonnière.
I have had alot of brides of late that are going more for the natural look, which is particularly nice, a sprig of Rosemary here and a sprig of Lily-of-the-valley there, add a little jute and done! (How much do you love the floral pocket square?!) Some great Boutonnière items include tiny versions of the following: Mint, Mini Rex Bergonia, Orchids, Roses, Rosemary, Brasilia Berries, Eucalyptus, Magnolia Foliage, Carnations, Various Ferns, Geranium Foliage, Seed Pods…
Contrasting botanical textures and little finishing touches like fun Ribbon, Wire or Jute make for a very interesting addition to the lapel. We always go for a little pre-wedding nature walk to see if there are any little treasures that we can pick up and add to make someones Boutonnière extra special, even if we have many weddings on one day!

Lastly, Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to report a crime of the botanical persuasion! Who and why are there florists out there making oversized Boutonnières? I’m not talking just a little too big, I am talking “I have planted a fern in my lapel pocket” huge! That would only look good in a photoshoot (that gives me an idea!)
Remember my floral friends, when it comes to Boutonnières, KEEP IT TINY!

Cool Kid: Hafsteinn Juliusson.
We found this yesterday and put it on the HH Facebook Page, but its worth a post all of its own! Icelandic Industrial/Interior designer, Hafsteinn Juliusson, has designed a range of Growing Jewelry, which is way too awesome for words! Everything from moss laden Pendants to Knuckledusters, Juliusson describes the collection as a clash of jewelry and gardening; couture and organism.

Whilst I wouldn’t want to be caught in a punch up with anyone who is wearing this little mossy number (or any punch up at all!), the HH team agreed, we would all love a piece of his work! What about you? Check out all of Juliusson’s work here.
Orchid! Orchid!
Ladies and Gentlemen, if you love Orchids, you are in luck today! Recently, the New York HH team went on a field trip to the New York Botanical Garden, which is currently showing the 2012 Orchid Exhibition and did it deliver on the most magnificent blooms or what?! On show was everything from Phalaenopsis to Cattleya Orchids, cascading off living walls. This year, the exhibition was created by French Botanist Patrick Blanc, who is the master of the Vertical Garden.
Along with wanting to live into the NYBG Conservatory, I got a little snap happy, and who wouldn’t being surrounded by walls of Orchids. If you are in New York or visiting, I do suggest visiting the exhibition, it runs until the 22nd April.
